NEW YORK (Reuters) \u2013 The United Nations said on Thursday it is \u201cnow abundantly clear to all\u201d that Eritrean troops are operating throughout Ethiopia\u2019s northern Tigray region and \u201cwell-corroborated\u201d reports suggest they are responsible for atrocities.<\/h5>\n
\u201cEritrean Defence Forces must leave Ethiopia, and they must not be enabled or permitted to continue their campaign of destruction before they do so,\u201d U.N. aid chief Mark Lowcock told the U.N. Security Council according to remarks seen by Reuters.<\/h5>\n
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called on Eritrean troops to leave Tigray, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Thursday.<\/h5>\n

Both the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments have denied Eritrean troops are in Tigray, despite dozens of eyewitness accounts and admissions that Eritreans are there from Tigray\u2019s federally-appointed regional administration.<\/h5>\n
\u201cIt is now abundantly clear to all, and openly acknowledged by officials of the government administration in Tigray, that Eritrean Defence Forces are operating throughout Tigray,\u201d Lowcock said. \u201cCountless well-corroborated reports suggest their culpability for atrocities.\u201d<\/h5>\n
Eritrea\u2019s Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed and Eritrea\u2019s Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel did not return calls and text messages seeking a response to Lowcock\u2019s remarks.<\/h5>\n
Speaking after Lowcock\u2019s closed briefing of the 15-member Security Council, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said Washington was alarmed by the humanitarian and human rights situation in Ethiopia.<\/h5>\n
\u201cWe urged the Ethiopian government to support an immediate end to the fighting in Tigray, and to that end the prompt withdrawal of Eritrean forces and Amhara regional forces from Tigray are essential steps,\u201d she said, also referring to troops from Ethiopia\u2019s Amhara region that neighbors Tigray.<\/h5>\n

The U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet asked Ethiopia on Thursday to allow monitors into Tigray to investigate reports of killings and sexual violence that may amount to war crimes in the northern region since late 2020.<\/h5>\n

\u201cMultiple credible and widely corroborated reports from Tigray \u2026 speak of widespread atrocities, involving mass killings, rapes and abductions of civilians,\u201d Lowcock told the council. \u201cIn one widely reported and heavily corroborated incident, Eritrean soldiers are alleged to have deliberately killed worshippers inside a historic Christian church in Axum.\u201d<\/h5>\n
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered air strikes and a ground offensive against Tigray\u2019s former ruling party \u2013 the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF) \u2013 after regional forces attacked federal army bases in the region on Nov. 4.<\/h5>\n
The TPLF withdrew from the regional capital, Mekelle, and major cities, but low-level fighting has continued.<\/h5>\n
Thousands of people have died, hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes and there are shortages of food, water and medicine in the region of more than 5 million people.<\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
