{"id":60843,"date":"2021-01-03T21:17:03","date_gmt":"2021-01-03T21:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arabsiyonews.com\/?p=60843"},"modified":"2021-01-03T21:17:03","modified_gmt":"2021-01-03T21:17:03","slug":"egypt-thrown-off-by-ethiopian-diplomats-nile-dam-remarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arabsiyonews.com\/index.php\/2021\/01\/03\/egypt-thrown-off-by-ethiopian-diplomats-nile-dam-remarks\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt Thrown Off by Ethiopian Diplomat\u2019s Nile Dam Remarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Cairo condemns what it calls an \u2018attack on Egyptian state\u2019 and accuses Addis Ababa of using an \u2018aggressive tone\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Egypt\u2019s foreign ministry has said it has summoned Ethiopia\u2019s top diplomat in Cairo over comments by an Addis Ababa official regarding a controversial dam on the Nile.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian ministry \u201csummoned the Ethiopian Charge d\u2019Affaires in Cairo to explain comments by the spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry for Foreign Affairs regarding domestic Egyptian affairs,\u201d it said late on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The statement did not cite specific comments but followed a statement by the Ethiopian official on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa\u2019s biggest hydroelectric project, which has raised fears for vital water supplies downstream in Egypt and Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know the GERD won\u2019t harm them, it\u2019s a diversion from internal problems,\u201d Dina Mufti, the Ethiopian ministry\u2019s spokesman and a former ambassador to Egypt, said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mufti contended that without this \u201cdistraction\u201d, Egypt and Sudan would \u201chave to deal with many local issues waiting to explode, especially up there [in Egypt]\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a new statement on Thursday, the Egyptian ministry condemned what it called an \u201cattack on the Egyptian state\u201d and accused Addis Ababa of using an \u201caggressive tone \u2026 to hide Ethiopia\u2019s multiple failures at home and abroad\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"1\">\u201cIt would have been better for the spokesman to pay attention to the deteriorating situation in his country, which is witnessing multiple conflicts and humanitarian crises that have killed hundreds and displaced tens of thousands of innocent civilians,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia\u2019s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on November 4 ordered the military to confront the ruling party of the dissident northern region of Tigray, where fighting is feared to have left thousands dead.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"vjs_video_3\" class=\"video-js vjs-paused vjs-controls-enabled vjs-workinghover vjs-v7 vjs-user-active vjs-layout-large bc-player-6tKQRAx7lu_default bc-player-6tKQRAx7lu_default-index-0 vjs-mouse vjs-ima3-not-playing-yet vjs-ima3-html5 vjs-dock vjs-player-info vjs-contextmenu vjs-contextmenu-ui vjs-errors vjs-quality-menu vjs-plugins-ready not-hover\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"region\" data-embed=\"default\" data-usage=\"cms:wordpress:5.6:2.0:javascript\" data-player=\"6tKQRAx7lu\" data-account=\"665003303001\" data-video-id=\"6127160313001\" aria-label=\"Video Player\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have been in talks since 2011 but have failed to reach a deal on filling the dam.
