Addis Ababa\u2019s reaction comes days after an Egyptian delegation met Somaliland President Musa Bihi Abdi in Hargeisa.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Addis Ababa.\u00a0Ethiopia \u2013 Ethiopia on Monday warned Egypt to refrain from\u00a0establishing any military base<\/a>\u00a0that would pose a security threat to the East African region.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0reaction<\/a>\u00a0comes days after an Egyptian delegation met Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi in Hargeisa where the two countries discussed Cairo\u2019s proposal to set up a military facility in the Republic of Somaliland.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a sovereign country, Egypt has a legitimate right to create relationships with any county in the region,\u201d Ethiopia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ambassador Dina Mufti, told the\u00a0Nation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

However, he adds that Egypt\u2019s relationships should not be established at the expense of another country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Egypt\u2019s intent to have a presence in the region would be a threat to a third country, that won\u2019t be appropriate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this case, we need to have concrete instances of what\u2019s happening\u2026we hope it won\u2019t be at the expense of Ethiopia or any other neighboring countries because if so, it will be unlawful, against humanity and international peace and security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethiopia has a good\u00a0relationship<\/a>\u00a0with most of its neighbors including \u00a0Somaliland.<\/p>\n

It is not yet known if Somaliland has accepted Egypt\u2019s proposal, but the two have reportedly reached an agreement \u201con an exchange of high-level representation offices in Hargeisa and Cairo.\u201d<\/p>\n

An Ethiopian delegation led by Finance minister\u00a0Ahmed Shide<\/a>\u00a0went to Hargeisa days after the Egyptian delegation had paid a visit.<\/p>\n

But Amb Mufti rejects speculation\u00a0that\u00a0Ethiopia\u2019s visit was due to concerns over Egypt\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are routine schedules aimed to discuss bilateral relations between the countries and it\u00a0has nothing to do<\/a>\u00a0with the Egyptian delegation\u2019s visit to Somaliland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, tripartite talks between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan\u00a0failed to reach<\/a>\u00a0a final agreement over the Grand Renaissance Dam and its use of the\u00a0Nile River for filling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some observers say Egypt\u2019s interest in gaining a foothold in Eastern Africa has piqued after Ethiopia said it will stick to its plan to\u00a0fill the mega-dam<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier last month, South Sudan rubbished reports that it has agreed to Egypt\u2019s request to build a military base in Pagak, a town bordering Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

Last week, Addis Ababa announced that the\u00a0first phase of filling of the dam was complete<\/a>, with the government hinting that it will start generating electricity in a few months.<\/p>\n

Downstream countries, mainly Egypt, have repeatedly warned Ethiopia against filling the dam before a final deal is reached.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
