{"id":19139,"date":"2016-03-07T14:18:50","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T14:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arabsiyonews.net\/?p=19139"},"modified":"2016-03-07T14:18:50","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T14:18:50","slug":"migration-and-media-freedom-top-agenda-at-eu-turkey-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arabsiyonews.com\/index.php\/2016\/03\/07\/migration-and-media-freedom-top-agenda-at-eu-turkey-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Migration and media freedom top agenda at EU-Turkey summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EU leaders are in Brussels on Monday to take another stab at solving the continent\u2019s migration crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The summit is expected to formally declare closed the Balkans route from Greece to Germany, and to pledge help to Athens to cope with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2016\/03\/07\/bottleneck-of-thousands-of-migrants-in-greece-adds-to-urgency-at-eu-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\">tens of thousands of migrants stranded there<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All eyes are on <a title=\"More about: Turkey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.euronews.com\/tag\/turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turkey<\/a> to take action to stop smugglers from sending migrants over to Europe, with backup from<span class=\"caps\">NATO<\/span> forces in the Aegean sea.<\/p>\n<p>But EU leaders are also concerned about media freedom in Turkey after the government <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2016\/03\/05\/turkey-heightened-concerns-over-press-freedom-as-zaman-reopens\/\" target=\"_blank\">seized control of the country\u2019s leading opposition newspaper<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>European Parliament President Martin Schulz said he had told Turkish Prime Minister <a title=\"More about: Ahmet Davutoglu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.euronews.com\/tag\/ahmet-davutoglu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ahmet Davutoglu<\/a> that media freedom was \u201ca non-negotiable element of our European identity\u201d and they had differed sharply.
